There is
frequent jet service to San Juan, Puerto Rico on a daily
basis, and at suprisingly low fares, from almost anywhere in
the continental United States. Major Airlines providing
service include American, Air Tran, Continental, Delta, Jet Blue, Northwest, Spirit, United, and USAir. There are six scheduled flights daily
from San Juan's Isla Grande Airport to Culebra on three local carriers (see below). Fare is around $55
one-way. These airlines sometimes also run on-demand flights from San Juan International Airport, where your flight from the States lands.
Check with the individual airlines for more information. The fare from International is more expensive, about $90 one way, because of much higher landing fees.
If you prefer, you can also take a ferry to Culebra from
the port town of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, about an hour's drive
east of San Juan. High-speed passenger ferries run daily at 9 AM, 3 PM and
7 PM and take about 90 minutes. There is also a car ferry at 4 PM on all weekdays and one at 9 AM on Wednesdays and Fridays. Call well in advance for
car reservations. If you are bringing over a rental
car, check your rental agreement to make sure it does not
prohibit taking the car on the ferry. Many car rental agencies
do not prohibit such transport, but some might. Ferry fares are $2.25 for passengers and
$15.50 for a car and driver. Seniors over 65 pay only $1, and seniors over 75 ride free. Car reservations must be made in
advance.
