Islands Magazine calls
Culebra "an unspoiled island, far from the distractions
of so-called civilization" (Feb. 2000). |

Culebra
Island is U.S. territory and is located in the heart of the
Caribbean, eight miles west of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin
Islands and 12 miles east of Puerto Rico. It was once part of
the Spanish Virgin Islands. Geographically, it belongs to the
Virgin Island chain. Administratively, it is the easternmost
municipality of Puerto Rico. Culebra is only 7 miles long by 3
miles wide and has a population of 1700 friendly islanders,
most of whom speak Spanish and English, the island's two
official languages.
What
Culebra also has aplenty is beaches, some of the most
beautiful and secluded in the entire Caribbean! Click
here to see what we mean! Culebra's small
town has all the basic amenities, like restaurants, grocery
stores, souvenir shops, car, boat and bike rentals, dive
shops, a few bars, even a fish market. Click

About 40%
of Culebra and the adjoining reefs and islets are wildlife
preserve, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Access is permitted, and there are spectacular hiking trails
all over the island. On our busiest beach, there might be a few dozen
people on an average weekday along its two miles of powder-white
sand. On other, even more deserted beaches, endangered sea
turtles come ashore to nest. Click
here for information on how you can
participate in a turtle-watching expedition. Culebra has
regular air service from San Juan and Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and high-speed ferry service from
Fajardo. Click
